Futures Network It uses widely available mobile technology in a novel way to capture and aggregate research-quality audio samples Your recordings will be studied by experts from the Noise Futures Network and we shall post an overview of the research results once sufficient data has been collected and analysed Britain s sonic environment is ever changing Urbanisation transport developments climate change and even everyday lifestyles all affect our built and natural soundscapes The sounds around us have an impact on our well being Some sounds have a positive or calming influence Others can be intrusive and disturbing or even affect our health By capturing sounds of today and contributing to the British Library s digital collections you can help build a permanent researchable http://folksonomy.org.uk/?permalink=1945 The UK Film Council became one of the highest profile quangos to be axed by the coalition government after culture secretary Jeremy Hunt unexpectedly announced its abolition In a raft of mergings streamlinings and closures Hunt also axed the Museums Libraries and Archives council MLA Film producer Tim Bevan who chairs the council said Abolishing the most successful film support organisation the UK has ever had is a bad decision imposed without any consultation or evaluation People will rightly look back on today s announcement and say it was a big mistake driven by short-term thinking and political expediency British film which is one of the UK s more successful growth industries deserves better Since it was created by Labour in 2000 the UKFC with 75 staff has been responsible for handing out more than pound 160m of lottery money to over 900 films Successes range from Bend it Like Beckham to Gosford Park to Fish Tank with the occasional dud - notably Sex Lives of the Potato Men - along the way Last August the Labour government began consultation on merging the film council with the BFI Mark Brown and Maev Kennedy 26 July 2010 School at a Time http://folksonomy.org.uk/?permalink=1939 BILL MOYERS But this intrigues me because you ve set out over these years to educate young girls primarily I mean you do have some boys in your schools but primarily your goal is to educate young girls And given the fact that the Afghani and Pakistani societies are so male dominated that men run the families they run the government they run the villages they run the Taliban why focus on girls instead of the men who are going to in that culture grow up and run things GREG MORTENSON Well it s obviously the boys need education also But as a child in Africa I learned a proverb And it says If we educate a boy we educate an individual But if we can educate a girl we educate a community o And what that means is when girls grow up become a mother they are the ones who promote the value of education in the community The education of girls has very powerful impacts in a society Number one the infant mortality s reduced Number two the population is reduced The third thing is the quality of health improves And from my own observation when girls learn how to read and write they often teach their mother how to read and write Boys we don t seem to do that as much They also you ll see people kids coming out for the marketplace have meat or vegetables wrapped in newspaper And then you ll see the mother very carefully unfolding a newspaper and ask her daughter to read the news to her And it s the first time that woman is able to get information of what s going on in the outside world around very powerful to see that And another compelling reason is when women are educated they re not as likely to condone or encourage their son to get into violence or into terrorism In fact culturally when someone goes on jihad they should get permission from their mother first And if they don t it s very shameful or disgraceful So when women are educated as I mentioned they are less likely to encourage their son to get into violence And I ve seen that happen Bill over the last decade in rural areas of Afghanistan Pakistan I mean I could go on all day about this but educating girls is very powerful Bill Moyers Journal 15 http://folksonomy.org.uk/?permalink=1937 This is my final project for motion graphic design which is a Flash animation that depicts an origin myth of the self-created hero Hundred Pacer The name Hundred Pacer derived from a kind of very venomous snake that exists in mountain areas of Taiwan called Hundred Pacer snake and the protagonist Hundred Pacer was an ordinary Paiwanese Indigenous girl until her and her father were killed by the mudslide and the snake God chooses her to revive in passing down the power The story was inspired by the Typhoon Morakot happened in August 2009 which killed nearly 500 people and destroyed half of Taiwan at that time Jonghsiang Kwan 2010 http://folksonomy.org.uk/?permalink=1937 Sun, 18 Jul 2010 00:04:10 +1000 London Underground Victoria Line ceramic tiles http://folksonomy.org.uk/?permalink=1936 The Victoria Line that opened between 1968 and 1971 provided the opportunity to produce a new and consistent look across the whole line from the trains themselves to the stations and platforms All aspects of design were overseen by Misha Black the Design Consultant for London Transport 1964e1968 who previously had a similar role with British Rail He employed the talents of the The Design Research Unit DRU e a collective of designers artists and architects who designed all aspects of the VIctoria Line Each platform was designed with a very muted colour scheme described by some of the press at the time as the late lavatorial style 1 P58 The tiled designs in each seat recess provided much needed colour and decoration and gave each stop its own visual identity The results were a mixture of direct inspiration from the station name and references to historical details of the local area Ian Moore Design Assembly 3 May 2010 Fig 1 film shot entirely on a cell phone http://folksonomy.org.uk/?permalink=1935 Aryan Kaganof s SMS Sugar Man has either the dubious or celebratory distinction - depending on your point of view of these kinds of things - of being the first feature film shot entirely on a cell phone specifically the Sony Ericsson W900i Given the film s strong sexual content Sony probably won t be championing the film any time soon But in their absence I will To Kaganof s grand credit the technique in which the film was shot never comes across as being gimmicky The majority of the movie is shot as any traditional movie is shot despite the unique camera being used Every once in awhile we do get a direct POV shot from one of the characters holding his or her own camera but this is used very sparingly and is thus unobtrusive Scenes are mostly lit and executed as if filmed with a traditional camera What s most surprising about the movie is that one might presuppose - or at least I did - that it would be comprised of mostly quick cuts I don t own a cell phone with a camera but I had assumed one of them could only hold small files for short scenes Against expectation Kaganof comprises SMS Sugar Man with fairly longish shots and gives the film a very lyrical tempo Mike Everleth 17 November 2008 http://folksonomy.org.uk/?permalink=1935 Sun, 11 Jul 2010 11:56:24 +1000 Xtranormal Text-to-Movie central conception in Marshall McLuhan s exploration of the relationship between media culture and the human sensorium Jay David Bolter claims synesthesia as one of the effects achieved by hypermedia However McLuhan s notion of synesthesia as the simultaneous interplay of the senses in a ratio fostered by the particular medium or media involved is missing in the theoretics of hypermedia which relegates all sensory phenomena to visual terms and overlooks the interplay between orality and literacy Research into synesthesia in art culture language and cognition supports McLuhan s conception of it as the normal process by which the brain reaches a new equilibrium when one of its functions is outered in a technology While hypermedia thankfully falls short of mimicking natural synesthesia interactive multimedia and virtual reality systems attempt to provide a false synesthesia that threatens the role of art and culture in achieving sensory balance James C Morrison 2000 Morrison J C
