Place Australia zero emissions driving http://folksonomy.org.uk/?permalink=1940 Better Place Australia is part of a global company dedicated to zero emissions driving We will enable the mass adoption of electric vehicles EVs in Australia by providing the infrastructure and services that make it easy affordable and attractive for motorists to adopt and drive electric vehicles The key barriers to the mass adoption of EVs in Australia and globally have been range anxiety the cost and risk of battery purchase and the impact of EV charging on the electricity grid To overcome range anxiety - the fear of EV drivers that their battery will run out of power - Better Place provides a personal charge spot at home access to a network of charge spots at work and in public access to instant recharge through battery swap stations and in-car services to help drivers know when and where to recharge The system of battery swapping also helps overcome the cost and risk of battery purchase The driver s subscription to Better Place covers use of a battery and the ability to swap and go at any swap station Rather than pay upfront drivers pay a monthly fee which covers their battery use Better Place manages the risk and performance of the pool of batteries by tracking their capability and use through the battery swap stations Better Place manages the impact of EV charging on the electricity grid by using software that coordinates the charge spots so that the charging needs of customers are met within network capacity constraints This helps make the electricity grid more efficient and significantly reduces the need for additional generation transmission and distribution infrastructure Better Place 2010 http://folksonomy.org.uk/?permalink=1940 Sun, 25 Jul 2010 20:10:44 +1000 One Man s Mission to Fight Terrorism One School at a Time http://folksonomy.org.uk/?permalink=1939 BILL MOYERS But this intrigues me because you ve set out over these years to educate young girls primarily I mean you do have some boys in your schools but primarily your goal is to educate young girls And given the fact that the Afghani and Pakistani societies are so male dominated that men run the families they run the government they run the villages they run the Taliban why focus on girls instead of the men who are going to in that culture grow up and run things GREG MORTENSON Well it s obviously the boys need education also But as a child in Africa I learned a proverb And it says If we educate a boy we educate an individual But if we can educate a girl we educate a community o And what that means is when girls grow up become a mother they are the ones who promote the value of education in the community The education of girls has very powerful impacts in a society Number one the infant mortality s reduced Number two the population is reduced The third thing is the quality of health improves And from my own observation when girls learn how to read and write they often teach their mother how to read and write Boys we don t seem to do that as much They also you ll see people kids coming out for the marketplace have meat or vegetables wrapped in newspaper And then you ll see the mother very carefully unfolding a newspaper and ask her daughter to read the news to her And it s the first time that woman is able to get information of what s going on in the outside world around very powerful to see that And another compelling reason is when women are educated they re not as likely to condone or encourage their son to get into violence or into terrorism In fact culturally when someone goes on jihad they should get permission from their mother first And if they don t it s very shameful or disgraceful So when women are educated as I mentioned they are less likely to encourage their son to get into violence And I ve seen that happen Bill over the last decade in rural areas of Afghanistan Pakistan I mean I could go on all day about this but educating girls is very powerful Bill Moyers Journal 15 January 2010 PBS http://folksonomy.org.uk/?permalink=1939 Sun, 25 Jul 2010 00:43:37 +1000 Defining visual thinking and visual literacy http://folksonomy.org.uk/?permalink=1938 Wileman 1993 defines visual literacy as the ability to read interpret and understand information presented in pictorial or graphic images p 114 Associated with visual literacy is visual thinking described as the ability to turn information of all types into pictures graphics or forms that help communicate the information Wileman p 114 A similar definition for visual literacy is the learned ability to interpret visual messages accurately and to create such messages Heinich Molenda Russell amp Smaldino 1999 p 64 The ERIC definition of visual literacy is a group of competencies that allows humans to discriminate and interpret the visible action objects and or symbols natural or constructed that they encounter in the environment http searcheric org Robinson as quoted in Sinatra 1986 describes visual literacy as an organizing force in promoting understanding retention and recall of so many academic concepts with which students must contend p v And lastly Sinatra defines visual literacy as the active reconstruction of past visual experience with incoming visual messages to obtain meaning p 5 with the emphasis on the action by the learner to create recognition The use and interpretation of images is a specific language in the sense that images are used to communicate messages that must be decoded in order to have meaning Branton 1999 Emery amp Flood 1998 If visual literacy is regarded as a language then there is a need to know how to communicate using this language which includes being alert to visual messages and critically reading or viewing images as the language of the messages Visual literacy like language literacy is culturally specific although there are universal symbols or visual images that are globally understood Suzanne Stokes 2002 1 The Occasional Wife 2 Stokes S 2002 Visual literacy in teaching and learning A literature perspective Electronic Journal for the Integration of Technology in Education contemporary origin myth of a native Taiwanese superhero http://folksonomy.org.uk/?permalink=1937 This is my final project for motion graphic design which is a Flash animation that depicts an origin myth of the self-created hero Hundred Pacer The name Hundred Pacer derived from a kind of very venomous snake that exists in mountain areas of Taiwan called Hundred Pacer snake and the protagonist Hundred Pacer was an ordinary Paiwanese Indigenous girl until her and her father were killed by the mudslide and the snake God chooses her to revive in passing down the power The story was inspired by the Typhoon Morakot happened in August 2009 which killed nearly 500 people and destroyed half of Taiwan at that time Jonghsiang Kwan 2010 http://folksonomy.org.uk/?permalink=1937 Sun, 18 Jul 2010 consistent look across the whole line from the trains themselves to the stations and platforms All aspects of design were overseen by Misha Black the Design Consultant for London Transport 1964e1968 who previously had a similar role with British Rail He employed the talents of the The Design Research Unit DRU e a collective of designers artists and architects who designed all aspects of the VIctoria Line Each platform was designed with a very muted colour scheme described by some of the press at the time as the late lavatorial style 1 P58 The tiled designs in each seat recess provided much needed colour and decoration and gave each stop its own visual identity The results were a mixture of direct inspiration from the station name and references to historical details of the local area Ian Moore Design Assembly 3 May 2010 Fig 1 Stockwell by Abram Games - a semi-abstract swan representing the nearby pub of the same name http://folksonomy.org.uk/?permalink=1936 Wed, 14 Jul 2010 distinction - depending on your point of view of these kinds of things - of being the first feature film shot entirely on a cell phone specifically the Sony Ericsson W900i Given the film s strong sexual content Sony probably won t be championing the film any time soon But in their absence I will To Kaganof s grand credit the technique in which the film was shot never comes across as being gimmicky The majority of the movie is shot as any traditional movie is shot despite the unique camera being used Every once in awhile we do get a direct POV shot from one of the characters holding his or her own camera but this is used very sparingly and is thus unobtrusive Scenes are mostly lit and executed as if filmed with a traditional camera What s most surprising about the movie is that one might presuppose - or at least I did - that it would be comprised of mostly quick cuts I don t own a cell phone with a camera but I had assumed one of them could only hold small files for short scenes Against expectation Kaganof comprises SMS Sugar Man with fairly longish shots and gives the film a very lyrical tempo Mike Everleth 17 November 2008 http://folksonomy.org.uk/?permalink=1935 Sun, 11 street It serves as a VJ tool a creative video game or an intuitive way of creating animation The system is operated collaboratively by an artist drawing the pictures and an animator adding movement to the artwork with a gamepad The design achieves virtually unlimited artistic complexity with a simple set of controls which can be mastered even by children The project is coordinated by OMA International Our approach is that all knowledge acquired within the Tagtool project should be shared We are inspired by the open source movement and believe that it is also relevant for the digital arts OMA International Austria Fig 1 Hagleitner Krenn Kermer Rieger 2008 Tagtool 039 short video documentary http://folksonomy.org.uk/?permalink=1934 Fri, 09 Jul 2010 11:17:31 +1000 Historypin doing people danced and spoke then retired to a stone seat to watch others dance and declaim By the time of Aristotle actors and dancers had become a caste with special skills of costuming speaking and moving Audiences stayed offstage and so developed their own skills of interpretation as spectators As critics the audience sought to speculate then about what the stage-characters did not http://folksonomy.org.uk/?permalink=1931 By now it seems like just about everyone has seen the iPhone 4 vs HTC EVO video and the rebuttal video The video portrays an electronics store employee trying to convince a person looking for an iPhone 4 to buy an HTC EVO 4G instead It s hilarious - like all good humor so funny because it s at least partially true But you know who didn t find it funny Best Buy How do I know that Because they re trying to fire the kid who made it The video in question was made by Brian Maupin a 25-year-old based in Kansas City Missouri For the past three and a half years he s been working at Best Buy selling mobile phones He s probably not going to be doing that anymore as Best Buy has suspended him indefinitely and is currently taking the steps to terminate him Maupin tells us The reason The video The video became so popular it currently has nearly 1 3 million views on YouTube that someone at Best Buy corporate saw it They then put two-and-two together that it was an employee at one of their stores that made it and the hammer came down They felt it disparaged a brand they carried iPhone Apple as well as the store itself and were fearful of stockholders amp customers being turned off to Best Buy Mobile Maupin says MG Siegler TechCrunch 1 July 2010 Fig 1 Tiny Watch Productions 2010 iPhone4 vs HTC Evo Fig 2 Tiny Watch Productions 2010 HTC EVO vs
